Prerequisite Verification
Some classes at Gavilan have prerequisites, which are courses that must be successfully completed with a 'C' or better before you are eligible to enroll in the next level course or a course for which this prerequisite prepares you. For clarification of all Requisite terms, see the definitions section.
Prerequisites can be cleared by courses in which the student is currently enrolled at Gavilan College, prior coursework completed at an accredited college or university, or AP exam scores.
If you did not complete the prerequisite at Gavilan, you will need to show that you have satisfied the requirement based on your academic history and transcripts.
How do I get my prerequiste verified so I can register?
There are two ways you can get your prerequisite verified:
- Meet with a counselor and show them your documents (necessary documents listed below) OR
- Download the Prerequisite Verification Form to your computer. Complete the form with your information and submit it to prereqs@gavilan.edu with the necessary documents (listed below)
Supporting Documents Needed:
For coursework taken at another U.S. College/Institution
You will need to submit the following with your completed form:
- A transcript (official or unofficial) showing a grade of “C” or better in the prerequisite course(s)
- Some courses have more than one prerequisite, such as BIO 9 (Biology course & Chemistry course). Make sure you have taken both prerequisite courses and include proof of completion of both.
For AP test score of 3 or higher
- You will need to submit both your completed prerequisite verification form and an AP Test Score from the College Board showing a score of 3 or higher.
Next Steps:
If you met with a counselor and got your prerequisite verified, you can register for the class at this point.
If you submitted the verification form with all supporting documents, you will be notified via email within 5 working days.
Email prereqs@gavilan.edu for any questions.
Note: Successful completion of the prerequisite verification process will not grant credit for any courses taken at another institution. For a formal transcript evaluation, schedule an appointment with a counselor.
